All
marble starts out as limestone. Under heat and pressure it is transformed
to the point that its original form is lost so that it becomes an even
grained rock with a distinctive sugary texture. Pure marble is snow
white in color and consists of pure grains of calcite. It is the
impurities, organic matter and small quantities of minerals that give
marble its distinctive colorations and veining.
Marble
has been used for centuries for food preparation and serving areas.
The draw backs in these applications is its vulnerability to naturally
occurring food acids, staining and scratching of its highly polished
surface. A low sheen finish is best for a food preparation surface
as it hides most scratches and deeper ones can be removed with out
difficulty in the home. The use of a cutting board is recommended.
Although marble is resistant to any heat that can be generated in the
kitchen, a trivet for hot pots and pans eliminates the chance of
scratches.
Technical
penetrating sealers that are applied to all our stone products are
absorbed by the marble and provide sufficient time to clean up a spill
before it might damage or leave a behind a stain.
Marble
is well suited for lavatory and vanity tops and other decorative surfaces
such as fireplace hearts and surrounds, side boards and occasional tables.
For these applications a highly polished finish brings out all the color
and movement one associates with marble. Again, penetrating sealers
provide a barrier against possible staining.
