Limestones
and dolostones are chemical sedimentary rocks. They are formed on the sea
floor. Some of the sediments on today’s sea floor probably represent
an early stage in the formation of fine grained limestones and dolostones.
Dolostone
and limestone look alike because they are similar in composition with
dolostones being slightly harder and have a brighter sheen. The will
also have a bell like ring when struck The general appearance is white or
gray. Both may contain shell fragments , corals and other mineral or
chemical impurities that impart varying color to the stone.
When
limestone becomes recrystalized by natural forces, it becomes marble.
All of the features of its original form are lost and it becomes an even
grained rock with a sugary texture. Pure marble is snow white but the
inclusion of various minerals and organic substances impart the color and
foliation that give it its unique beauty.
